Hey guys. Im currently working on a 40 breeder build, and Im on the fence in deciding exactly what I want to do with it. I have a 55 Gallon setup already that is becoming a softy tank, due to nitrates and Tangs, and the 55 will be upgraded to a 125 mixed reef after this 40 build.

I also have a mantis shrimp 20 long build in the works.

So I have 2 ideas for the 40.

An agressive tank with maybe a snowflake eel, fu manchu lion, toby puffer maybe...

Or go in the other direction with an SPS dominated reef with a few small fish.

My major question is... is SPS really that complicated? Im not really interested in calcium reactors and automatic dosers etc etc. I would pretty much go with Mp10s, a good skimmer, reef Breeders LED fixture and GFO and Carbon reactors and a refugium section in the sump with chaeto, ATO. Just how much dosing is involved with SPS? I have all of the test kits, that wouldnt be a problem. Is it possible to manually dose once a day and keep everything thriving? Im up for the challenge in the phosphate and Nitrate area, just not sure about the Calcium/Alk? and other trace element dosing. I could get into a routine of dosing once a day, but that would be about as much as I could keep with , with 2 other setups to attend to, a wife, and 2 kids.

Both of these setups sound good to me, although Im leaning toward the SPS idea. Help a brother decide. LOL Im at the point where lighting and equipment can be ordered, and need to make a final decision. I would appreciate any input.

if you do regular water changes, then that should replenish the calc and alk and mag that your sps would use. so yo wont have to dose anything. til you got about 20 sps pieces in there

I have a 40 breeder that i am manually dosing. I dose calcium solution in the morning and ALK solution after lights out. Its pretty simple really
