    • We have a 400 gallon lobster tank at our fish market, my chiller died, and I'm buying a new one, my question is why do I need the 600-700 gallon sump, why can't I take the drain, tie it directly in a filter run through the pump to the chiller and back to the tank?

    Welcome to 3reef,

Has to be one of the most interesting questions I have seen on a forum.

I would assume that if a large lobster dies, the water would quickly foul. The larger volume of water allow for a larger margin of error.

While I have absolutely no first hand experience with keeping multiple large lobsters I would imagine you could conceivable get a smaller sump.

If one lobster dies and the water parameter decline it may lead to another lobster death, a domino effect so to speak. You could possibly loose all your lobsters without a large volume of water and biological filter.

Is there any other filtration at all?
The larger the sump, the less you need a more expensive filtration setup. You can go much longer before a water change. I am assuming this is why they went with this setup.

Edit: And where is this 400 Gallon tank located at. I would love to see it.

THE SUMP WILL KEEP THE DISPLAY CLEAN....AND HOST ALL THE GOOD BACTERIA IN THE SUMP RATHER THEN THE MAIN DISPLAY.YOU COULD RUN IT FROM THE DRAIN INTO THE FILTER AND FROM THE FILTER BACK INTO THE TANK...BUT YOUR GONNA DO A LOT OF FILTER CLEANING...AND YOU WILL DEVELOP NITRATE PROBLEMS AND POOR WATER QUALITY IF YOU DON'T KEEP THE FILTER CLEAN. A HUGE TANK LIKE THAT...ID GO WITH THE SUMP...
