i received an anemone as a gift on tuesday even though i'd said i didn't want one, but hey its cool and i'm enjoying it, but my only lighting was 2-18" fw bulbs that came standard w/tank...i've framed up a custom canopy and the only fixture available to me was a 2 bulb sli light (thin fluorescent tube) they're 4100k and give my tank a greenish tint but i'm ok with that til i get a T5 fixture in(gottA drive an hour to get 1 and i'm broke) so for the next 12 days, will my anemone be ok at 2x40w 4100k for 8-10 hrs a day...also just now got it wired up and fitted to canopy and turned it on...yellow tang started freakin out!!!! whats up with that

Tang just experienced a bit of a shock from the rapid increase in light intensity
you have gone from 36 watts total to 116 watts total - the Tang imo will settle down

    the Nem
1 - I have no idea on how long without the correct intensity and colour temp of light the nem will last (4100K are OK for illuminating kitchens and other small rooms of the house when its dark, but not ideal for aquariums IMO)
2 - Lighting is only 1 part of the puzzle you need to work out in order to support/ make happy and Nem, water quality and water maturity are other equally important aspects

they are not good additions to new set ups, there are more failure stories than success ones , which is a great shame as they are very attractive creatures

good luck, upgrade those lights as quickly as you can and I hope it goes well for you both.

i would have never jumped at the nem at this stage, it was only 13 bucks, however i cannot stand by and watch something slowly die so i put a lot of time into fashioning up the strongest lights i could right now, tang has settled down and nem is doin great so far...already expanded tentacles and brightened color after 1 hr under stronger lights....would i be better off using the large 48" bulbs...i have 2 types, a 34 watt t12 that puts out a white light or a 40 watt t12 that has a more yellow light, don't know k rating, but i can remove a fixture from my basement ceiling and set it on my canopy? any thoughts...would using the 2 sli bulbs and 2 t12's helps

hey Brian - your right and I have myself been handed bags with livestock in from a smiling son and wife and my 1st instinct was "Oh no they didnt buy this did they"

I would use the whiter lights to be honest at this stage and yes as many as them as you can take from other locations is a smart move IMO ( Thats what I would do in your situation )

i added the 2-18" standard flourescents to the 2-48" 4100k fluorescent sli tubes and my nem has been doin great since sat....he has expanded to nearly softball size and compfortably positioned himself by the aerator bubbles...i just painted my canopy and put trim from around the house on it looks pretty good i'll hafta post some pics later

At 4100k you are getting to the light spectrum where nuisance algae may start to be an issue, I would keep a close eye on it and take it slow. Maybe dial back how many hours a day your lights are on and slowly increase it.

Quickly expanding is not a good sign, just so you know.
I would do everything possible to get rid of the anemone. If that thing goes in your tank, it will take everything else with it.
