So in the next week or so, I'll be starting my frag tank build. Just for a spoiler, it's 48x24x16, stay tuned for the build up.

I can get my hands on a 48" wavepoint fixture for a decent price. Question is, is that fixture enough for a frag tank? Or is MH really the way to go to get max growth? It'll be mainly SPS.

I would only go with MH for an SPS frag tank. Otherwise it will take forever to get the growth you want.

that's all I needed to hear. lol. I'll likely be going with a phoenix 14k bulb. should I add some kind of actinic supplementation? Or will the 14k be good enough?

That fixture will work just fine. If you are looking for growth only then use 6500K and 10000K bulbs. If you are looking for color only then use 20000K bulbs. If you are looking for a mix of both then use a combination of bulbs. These rules apply no matter what type of lighting you are using.

I completely disagree with that statement, I am currently using a 6 bulb 36" T5 light over my 30 gallon breeder frag tank and have seen tons of growth since I set it up.

I do recommend that you make sure that the light you use has individual reflectors. Mine is DIY using Ice cap reflectors, End caps & Standoff's and 3-Advanced Workhorse 5 ballasts. There are 2-10,000 K, 2-12,000 K and 2-Antinic bulbs right now.

10k or 12k for growth, anything higher will be just for color.
