I have a BioCube and would like to possibly encounter the Sump world. I only have room for a 5.5 gallon tank. Is it worth my time and effort making one from scratch ?

Yes. It most definitely is. The added water volume and extra space for equipment is a great addition.

Thanks, I would like to have a larger pod population. And idea what pump would be good for a sump this size? I already have a maxi jet 1200.

If you were to make it a fuge you could use the Maxijet 1200. Maybe throw some miracle mud in there with some chaeto or mangroves. That would probably be most beneficial to your tank.

Here is a link to Miracle Mud.

also, try looking for some rubbermaid containers that could fit where you need it to. something that small would be alright as far as strength. And it would be hella cheap.

I wanted to do this before i got my 40B for my sump.

I already own a 5.5 gallon tank, I picked it up for 10.99 at PetLand. I will be buying another tank for my ATO, found a 2.5 Gallon for that. With my new LEDs I only use 2 gallons a week if that.

How do you plan to do an overflow from the cube? I've been looking into it too and it seams that like said above, Rubbermaid would be best because you can get more volume in less space.

Well I'll look into the Rubbermaid but how would you make chambers? And I am looking to do what Ashvillian did with his overflow.
