I don't think the powerhead would be too much. Just watch where you place things so they don't get blasted. As far as no cycle right now, did everything come from an existing system? If the sand and rocks came from an established tank, there won't be much of a cycle if any. It all depends on the transit times between systems and how much die off there was. If not, and this is an entirely new system, it may take a while for the cycle to get going. During this time leave your skimmer off if you do decide to attach it, which is a good idea IMO.

so zooanthids are low water flow coral then? so i would be fine to take out the power head? and replace with protein skimmer?

Yes well the sand sat around at the LFS but was still wet i had some little sand burrowing snails still alive in it and still eat algae to this day of the LR that i got from Petco all was washed very well so i guess ill wait a few months to maybe see some little life forms? :)

I would keep the power head
the image showing the water level and flow on water surface looks identical to how my
    5 gallon looks
I have Zoanthids and a couple of small leathers and they are fine
I have Zoanthids in my larger reef with loads of flow 60+ x water volume and they are fine as long as you dont point the power head at them

I think a skimmer and the power head will be a good combo
but it the corals seem to be struggling down sizing the power head may be a better option than removing it IMO

Rock - your going to get more I assume otherwise you are going to run out of coral location spots very quickly
if you go for more live rock, that will extend your cycle so you need to do it before adding any higher life forms

if you wanted to add dry rock, you could do that in stages without affecting your cycle ( OK you may do if you disturb the sand bed when adding new rock, but it will be minor)

one last thing on water flow - sometimes just moving the power head rather than removing or down sizing works out , moving it to the side wall and aiming it at the other side wall means the flow has further to go before hitting and deflecting and this will reduce the force that its deflected with which reduces the turbulance created

so experimentation until your corals in your tank look like they are contented,is the key IMHO

thanks Steve, yes i have moved the power around quit a bit, it has a problem with moving the sand into little mountains and now that i have it pointing at the live rock it is deflecting and evenly putting it out IMO i hate the way it looks in there dont know how i could really hide it, it being so big and all for a 5 gallon
