Yep, I need a good skimmer but not an expensive one. Can someone recommend brands and where to purchase? Can I remove my powerhead from the tank then? Can I remove my nitrate factory sponge also? Should I keep my hang-on double bag carbon filter?

    Thanks

Three skimmers that would be good for a 55:
    Aqua C remora
    Octopus BH-100F
    Aqua Medic Turboflotor

No, you cannot remove the powerhead, and you should have more than just one. Powerheads create flow in a marine tank which is vital to its health, a skimmer is simply a form of mechanical filtration. Two completely different pieces of equipment.
As for the mechanical filters, it really depends. I always run carbon, 24/7, so I would say no. But, the octopus skimmer has an extra chamber built into it, and you can move your carbon bags there, so if you chose the octopus, than yes.

I chose the AquaC remora. Had a few issues when I started up, but soon realized they were user errors! ;)

    Great unit btw.

Well I decided I couldn't pass on the drsfostersmith coralife for $76 on sale.

Oh, lost my tomato clown this a.m., last night he was trying to get out of the tank in the bottom corner and this a.m. he was toast.

That was going to be my suggestion. I take it you mean the Coralife 65. It is a little touchy to water level if put in the sump but you will figure it out.

I use a CSS 125 on my 55 and it seems to do the job. I paid $125 for mine from my lfs. For what I paid it does great. With a few minor mods it can be better.
