I just added a six line wrasse to my tank yesterday. After panicking that I couldn't find him last night I learned he hides at night. Now today I have seen him rub against a rock several different times. Is this something I should be concerned about?

6lines are a hearty fish that seem to do well, he may have a little ich or be a little stressed but my bet is he will pull through they are jumpers and may leave the tank if you don't have a barrier of some type.

There's two types of "rubbing" you might see a wrasses doing.

One is a style where they "flick" themselves off of a surface. Imagine bouncing off a trampoline; it's a lot like that. This is a territorial display/behavior, and not one to be confused with a sign of disease. Although it might end up ultimately being more problematic to your other fishes...

The other is a rubbing or "scratching" an appreciable amount of the body as they swim past the rock. This behavior is the one associated with something parasitic.

OK that makes me feel a little better. The "trampoline" example is exactly what it reminds me of. Definitely not scratching a significant portion of its body.

Thanks to all for your responses!

What other fish do you have with him? They have been known to be little bullies, even though mine has been well behaved so far.

+1! I have seen my Helfrichi Firefish do this a number of times and always wondered why...

Yeah, it's not a behavior only associated with wrasses. Tangs can do it too.

Also, they cocoon themselves at night which is very hard to find - especially when you're looking for the bare fish.
