I would bet that the majority of ppl with aquariums use a standard powerbar and thats it.
Most ppl don't know what a gfci is.

Like Vin, I had mentioned the GFCI on the first page of your thread. It could and will even save a life due to electrocution when touching things in, or hooked to a system.
Some people don't like them b/c theirs may 'pop off/cut power' too often on their system- instead of investigating/figuring out which piece/s of eauipment are faulty ground and tripping the GFCI to cut the power- when it clicks and cuts the power- THATS when you figure out what happened=
possibly preventing a fire, and yes, preventing an electrocution.
My GFCI rarely ever breaks the circuit/cuts power. When it does, first I just try and put it back on, it it quickly 'pops off' again- I figure out why. I"ve had power heads be the culprit usually for me.
This is a rare event for me though.

I hope you get and use GFCI's from now on, and yes, just plug everything into it before the wall outlet- or even change out the wall outlet for a GFCI.

aybe some builder/electricians will chime in here, but, for many years the building codes require GFCI outlets ANYWHERE water may come in contact- namely (like my house), the bathrooms, kitchen, and outdoors near the patios.
Then, you can buy them and change a standard one out for a GFCI easily yourself anywhere in the home, but to work properly, the dwelling has to have the 3 prong outlets and have a ground to work right- which has also been mandated in the codes for many years.

    Good luck, and Reef On!

Be sure to check the size of the breaker that controls the outlet so you can purchase a gfci of the proper amperage. Most will have 15 or 20 amp breakers. Match the amperage of the gfci to that of the controlling breaker.☺

Hell no, I wouldn't do what others do:p

Thats why I'm learning what I can do with my set up and this also teaches others the various options

    1. Gfci outlet
    2. Gfci powerbar
    3. Gfci adaptor to plug your powerbar

At least now the info is out there:)
