Well, the 210g is on hold until we settle a fence issue. Good fences make good neighbors, bad fences make.... Renee ticked off with her HOA. It's an outdoor sump, so the fence needs to be completed first... followed by a backyard landscaping project which involves concrete removal, new grass, sprinkler system and patio.

BUT, I hope for it to be resolved soon. A certified letter pointing out the safety issues and pointing out all their code violations should get someone going. Especially where I used statements like "breach of their fiduciary obligations" and "evidence of their own malfeasances". Ya, that's right, I contacted a lawyer.

So, in the meantime, we are ready to get started on moving the little guys in the front room, upstairs to their 60g tank. I have to turn in my glass tank for an acrylic (blah). I'm converting most of my tanks and bolting the acrylics to the wall. It's a part of my EQ Preparedness Plan.

Upstairs is this awful generic linen vanity, if you will. Everything in the house is that standard color, which doesn't match the floor. It's also just plain ugly. So, the first thing to do is to remove the built in vanity and replace it with a darker wood with a more appealing look. We want to keep the linen part of it, because storage is scarce, so it'll be a custom all-in-one tank without a sump.

The white railing you see on the stairs will be coming out replaced with black wrought iron and a nice wood handrail... that matches the floor. What's up with that.

Oh right.... it's the same people who picked out this crazy color scheme.

So, a custom cabinet guy is going to come in an take care of some business. I want the cabient to match our bedroom furniture somewhat.

Super excited to follow along on this and all your other projects. I love that you have a more species specific tank/tanks!

All be so happy when all the permanent tanks are up and running.

.... and then the big one will hit.

The first guy to go in is my special friend the Fu manchu. He's never had a tankmate besides a very small Coral Croucher and Red fin Waspfish. I want him to get use to the environment before everyone else gets in there.

As for your EQ plan, I have read that that is a bad idea. Something to do with somethings moving and others not. I wish i could remember the exact reasoning. Worth looking in to.

    I HATE acrylic.

    Love your lion.

    From RC:

"To earthquake proof your step you need to anchor the stand to the wall, and make sure you have a large lip all the way around your stand to make sure the tank does not slide off of the stand. The biggest problem unless it is a really major quake is the stand falling over, or the tank sliding off of the stand. If you can keep the stand upright and the tank on top you should be ok.

    Kim"

"Don't mean to be rude, but I don't really think you gave good advice. And any large lip isn't going to keep a tank that wants to move in one place. Doesn't matter how big it is, it only matters how you attach it. So sure, if you nail it with 8d nails at 6" OC then you'll probably be ok. But nobody does that, and you can't even fit an 8d nail into most stands cause it's too long (not to mention ugly). Let's not also forget that for large tanks, strapping the stand to a wall can be hazardous to the wall. 1000 pounds with a 1.2g acceleration pulling away from a 2x4 stud is most likely going to break it. Let's not go breaking our stud walls. Besides this, any small quake isn't going to move any tanks unless their on wheels. It starts becoming a problem when you have big ones. At this point, I'd be more worried about my house than my tank."

"Your best quake proofing for an aquarium in California is to just have a very strong stand on a concrete slab of a house. Forget tying it to the wall. Walls move in a large quake. The concrete slab will rise and fall with the quake and the most you will get is water slopping over the top. The only other problem would be if the stand is not perfectly flat on top, you may consider having some very strong, High density foam along the edges of a glass tank. Not touching the bottom glass though since that would create a pressure point on the glass. If you loose a tank to a quake after you have it on a firm stand, you have lost your home as well. "

"Structural engineer here.. i do not recommend anchoring it to the wall or floor... let it move with everything else. worst thing is that you will have some water slosh around if the quake is of reasonable size.

the higher up you are in a building - the more movement you can expect - e.g. a person living on the 3rd floor will experience greater movement during the same quake than someone living a few floors down. "

We posted at the same time... I am now reading above.

My problem isn't so much with the tanks falling... it's what will be falling OUT of them. Tanks can slosh through some moderate ones. If they were bolted to the wall, it would be more of a shake for them. But then we wouldn't be stepping over sting fish and waspfish in the dark. That has me a little concerned.

Mesh top with wire top holders that they use for reptiles to hold the top down.

I'll consult the engineer. That's an important exit.

It's not the slosh (I think I said that wrong above), but the falling over of taller/smaller footprint tanks. All my tanks are covered because scorps are jumpers.

It's actually not the larger tanks I fear... it's the nano cubes with their tall stands. Maybe I should move the stingfish out of the nanocube that is in the youngest's room.
