Nice start, I would get rid of the glass tops, your going to need some gas exchange and glass tops aren't good. ;)

The water is finally clearing up but every time I move something or re arrange or clean sand off the glass by the sand bed it stirs up silt! I don't remember it being like this before. When I took the sand bed out it was pretty firm at the surface. Anyone know how long this will last?

It will be a couple of weeks or longer until the bacteria establish in the sand.

I could live with silt for A few weeks. Hopefully all of that beneficial bacteria along with the snails and crabs that I buried will come out!

I would move the circulation pumps higher in the tank. Aim at least one at the surface to get better gas exchange. This should also help with the sand storms.
