It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Bio-balls are another thing that got a bad rap. Used correctly in a wet to dry type of set up they can be very efficient. Bio-balls are probably better utilized in fish type of systems versus the typical high tech reefs of today. I would certainly be interested in the specifics of the bio-ball placement he suggest.

Congrats, you're almost there. Wish I had some to drill a tank and build a stand, very cool.

yes, I am lucky. He's a great guy. He's also incredibly talented - his carpentry skills are amazing. He actually had a LFS for a while and built all of the systems himself. He kept quite a bit of coral at that time. From what I can discern, he really places a big importance on the refugium in terms of growing plants and such which keeps the nitrates down.

ok, have the new stand! and our friend is working on building my sump. I've spent more money (included in any update of course) so I have virtually everything needed to make this change happen! Have to wait on the sump (maybe this weekend/fingers crossed) and then away we go! Visually, I'm really happy with the stand, it looks really nice and will fit well in the corner where my corner tank is so that's nice :)

Since I'm adding a refugium, do you think I should start out running biopellets or wait to see if I need them? I'm thinking to keep them. Any thoughts?

I would personally wait, but then again I have never run them period; so take that with a grain of salt :)
