I aquired a 75 gallon DT and was wondering if a 55 gallon sump is to big for it?

No that will just provide you with more options in the design of the sump and greater stability of the system through a large water volume. I suggest setting the return section in the center of the 55 with the skimmer section on one side and a refugium on the other side.

You will be fine. I have a 75 gallon tank, with a 30 gallon sump and often wish I had more room for stuff in there. Additionally, the greater your water volume, the less likely that parameters will go out of whack if, for example something dies that you can't get to without breaking down your rock work, etc.

As said above bigger is better when it comes to sump.

There are people who actually have larger sumps than display tanks when their space is limited for the DT and they need large system stability.
