6x54W T5HO will work quite effectively, without the heat of MH.

I was looking at getting 2 250metal halide lights. Would that be to much for a 75 gallon. You have a have so much light for how much water?

You will 2 MH fixture for a 75 but for the depth a minimum is 175W bulbs. Consider getting supplemental lighting in the blue spectrum with the MH fixtures.

I would keep the bulbs 10-12 above water and fans installed into canopy. if you dont want (2) actinics t5's or blue led strip. then go with a phoenix 14k mh bulb.

I currently have 2x175w and led strip on my 4' 55g. diy $100 cree led thread shows pics inside my canopy and Im using aro ballasts from hellolights.

2x250 watt Halides will be perfect for a 75g. You'll be able to keep everything and anything. And if you decide to upgrade, you can still use those halides.
