Oh man......I read somewhere that 1 to 2 inch sandbase is considered a regular sandbed. Six inches is a DSB. I also read in this article that the in-beween range can generate problems. But what problems those are.......I cannot remember. Where did I read it? Don't know. I have read sooooo much on the SW subject in the last year it makes my head spin. All I know is that I limited myself to 2 inches in the end.

If I were you, I would PM tangster if you are thinking about changing up your sand bed. That dude has helped me out on countless occasions (in fact I have a PM out to him about skimming right now) and has never steered me wrong. There are a few gurus on this site and he is one of them.

Looks to me like you just set this up and your cycle hasn't even started yet.

If it were me, I'd just scoop out enough to take it down to 2". You won't be able to do this safely after the cycle once you have livestock...

Well, if your tank is just starting out, it is definitely time to do it. And a two inch sandbed is definitely the safe way to go. If you wait for a few months, disturbing the sand bed can be disastrous. I know. I did it. Had a two month cycle to prove it.......not that I had a choice, I had a leak and had to change tanks fast. But you get the point.

Save the sand for the fuge. Run a DSB in the fuge, as it will be OK there.
