Your better off replacing them now and just cause his article says 14+ months doesn't mean much just check the bulbs as above said and also if your starting fresh with the tank you might as well start with new bulbs

are you not looking to upgrade light fixtures? you have created several threads on led lighting. if you are planning on getting a new fixture i would suggest saving your money for that. those bulbs are gonna be 35 bucks a piece.

^ I'm pretty sure in his threads he stats that he will upgrade sometime in the future , having corals in the tank with bad bulbs won't be a good idea unless you are going to upgrade ASAP

Yeah I'm not upgrading for a while. I guess I'll just replace the bulbs before I get coral. It will be 50$.

or you could just stick with the bulbs, dont purchase any corals and save that money for a fixture. then you can get corals after you buy a fixture. that would be the way to go.

Sadly it would take a very long time for my to save 200$. I'm 14 with no job. It will most likely be a birthday present.

9 months is about the time to replace your compacts. I bought mine online and got a pretty good deal. :)

I just ordered my Rapid LED kit today, no more compacts for me. :-D

get a job, or just wait for your birthday or till some money comes in to get a fixture. patience is key dont rush into getting corals.

i purchased a 14gal cube with bulbs the prior owner claimed to be ~6 months old. the tank was blooming with algae ive never seen. bulbs had the brown/black rings on the end that people are talking about.

replaced the bulbs, and this nuissance algae is gone and everything else is properly growing. so yes +1 to changing the bulbs routinely
