i am thinking of buying a friends 90 gal corner tank. the light that is currently on it is a 96 watt quad smartpaq 2060. does anyone have any experience with this light? is this suitable for a reef tank? if not, what would you reccomend? i'm a newby so i need all the detail you want to give

That light is not really good for a reef tank. I would recommend a 6 bulb T5 fixture of 2x250w MH lights. Either one will be real good for that sized tank. T5s will be cheaper and produce less heat, but the Mh will have that shimmer and are the closest thing to natural sunlight. Do you have the actual dimensions of the tank?

I've been thinking about setting up one of these for a while. My plan is to toss a 400w 20k halide over it with a nice reflector and call it a day.

Id go with 2x250 watt mh and some t5hos for atinic supplement! knowing the dimesions of the tank would be great. i like the 400watts but thats ALOT of light and you would have to be very careful on placement of coral due to bleaching that would accur if you placed them to close to lights
