So, Dora (female clown) has some type of fungus on her face. I started treating with Pimafix last night. Today she won't eat and is swimming vertical. I'm really upset! In 6 months I've never had a sick fish. I'm not really sure what to do...I'll just keep treating with the Pimafix and hope for the best.

Thanks. I really hope this fungus, or whatever it is, doesn't spread either.

I know. I thought about setting one up tonight, but I just don't have anywhere to put it - and she's already been in the tank for several days with this fungus...so....

Hospital tanks can do more harm than good. I don't QT fish, ever. If you pick healthy fish that are eating well when you buy them and obtain from reputable sources, disease should not be an issue. Eating fish are typically healthy fish if they look good.

Feed good food with garlic. Make sure your skimmer is producing skimmate so that the water is reasonably clean, perhaps do a water change. However, stress facilitates disease. If a fish is stressed out, the immune system weakens, opening it up to parasites and fungus. Chances are if you put the clown in a hospital tank it would stand less of a chance than in your main system. I have never lost a fish to a disease (knock on wood), never had ich, etc. My clown just recovered from one hell of a gash in her side. I just fed well and left everyone alone.

Good luck with you fish and I'm sorry to hear of your troubles so early in your tank. The immune system may have weakened during your cycle. Just feed well and keep the tank clean, and that's all I would do.

I respectfully disagree.:) There is no way to be 100% sure a fish is disease/parasite free just by looking at it in the fish store before you purchase it. The fish could be covered in early stage ich and you wouldn't be able to see it with the naked eye. There are also internal parasites and worms that would be impossible to see. Also, a QT isn't just for disease prevention. It allows the new fish to be able to eat and gain essential fat reserves before it is put into the main tank were it will be harassed be current inhabitants.
