I'm finishing up those loose ends before I put everything together. I have the sand, I have about 90 G of RO/DI water made up, and the salt with which to mix it.

I had made myself a small power center consisting of a single quad box and two duplex receptacle boxes. Now that I'm about to employ a new Coralife MH light fixture with two additional power plugs, I'll need another quad to accomodate it.

    Here's the small build thread:

Opening up the box to which I'm going to add the quad:

Adding the duplex receptacles and splicing the wires:

    What a mess!!

Are all those wires going to fit in there?

    Looks kinda tight?

Does anyone know a licensed electrician? Hey, wait a minute!! Nevermind.

Maybe I can get this all to fit.

    And it all comes together.

Ooooh. Someone say "Electrical Porn Quarterly?"

Next is mounting this to the back of the new stand, which should only take a few minutes.

    Getting closer!!! ;D:);D

Looks good Sparky! Are you going to use any GFCI's? Luna

It will all be fine, as long as the main cord is plugged into a GFI outlet, or if there is a GFI outlet in-line between that and the main panel. My outlets behind the tank aren't GFI outlets, but they are powered from off the GFI outlet over my wet-bar sink, which makes it O.K.
Nice job on the DIY power-tap ReefSparky. How many WATTS are gonna be running off that with the MH lights/ballasts, heater, and all the pumps on?

Yes Luna. The single receptacle in the wall adjacent to the tank, into which this yellow cord will plug, is GFCI protected.

I really should have mentioned that. Of course an electrician is going to have everything in his aquarium GFCI protected! :):)

Bogie, you probably know this, but for those who dont: I should note that simply because a receptacle is "powered off" a GFCI upstream, doesn't mean it's now GFCI protected. It must be wired properly off the traveller side of the GFCI receptacle upstream.

To answer your question, I don't know about wattage, as I've never used a wattmeter, but it's the amperage with which we're interested. All said and done, on this 15 amp circuit, I'll probably have less than 10 amps with everything running.

Now seeing all the wiring, I think I vote for putting doors on the front and sides, or at least easily removable panels.

I know this isn't an electrical forum, and ReefSparky, Tangster, and a few others already know this, but for those who don't:
There is a "line" and "load" connection on the back of a GFI.
The "line" side of the GFI must be connected to the power supply (from the panel/circut breaker).
For any outlets "down-stream" of the GFI to also be protected by the GFI, they must be powered off the "load" side connections of the GFI.
