I have been planning on setting up a 90 gallon reef but was recently told that I should go with a 75 gallon tank since 90 gallon all-glass aquariums were VERY unstable and were prone to leaking due to any tiny imperfection in the stand supporting them.

I initially wanted to go with the 90 since it was a bit bigger/more water volume, but if it is all going to end up on my floor, then it is a no-go.

Please let me know if you have heard anything regarding a 75 gallon being a better/longer lasting tank than a 90 gallon.

Also, my 75 was built in 2000, the 90 was built in 1996, so neither are spring chickens.

    Any advise would be great.

I have never heard of this before. Was it an LFS with a 75 gallon to unload that told you that?

I used to have a 90 for about 2 years it was used by another reefer for about 7 years before i got it. I never had any problems with it nor have i ever heard they are prone to leaks. Just my .02

I have had my current 90g(used) for last 5 yrs with no issues(knocking on wood). I think that the person who told you that just had a bad exp. or he/she is just regurgitating what they heard. Any tank can leak if the foundation is not leveled, just as with a house thats sitting on a unleveled foundation. Sooner or later the house's walls will crack.

I've only ever heard of 72G Bow front tanks having issues with leaking. Never 90G.

I don't think that information has any truth behind it.

I have never heard of a 90g failing under normal circumstances.

thanks guys, that is a HUGE relief.

I guess all I can do is make sure the stand is as level as possible and go from there. I guess the tank's age doesnt phase me too much.

Heres another question... my girlfriend can't stand the faux-wood pattern on the tank trim plastic. I want to tape everything off and spray paint it flat black. Any reason not to do this as long as I dont get any in the tank (it is empty) and obviously dont get any on the glass?

i wouldnt use spray paint because you know with cleaning, salt creep etc. one day youre gonna get paint chips in the tank.

I can think of about 10 People with 90 gallong reefs, all at least 18 months old ... no one has had a problem with leaks.
