I ordered my lighting for my new 90 gallon reef setup:

    2 x 150 watt hqi metal halide 20k bulbs
    2 x 65 PC Actinic
    2 x 36 watt PC 10K
    2 4" fans
    Moonlights

I hope this is enough for my tank....hoping to keep inverts, possibly corals, and a clam or two. I don't want anything I put in to suffer a "dim" fate.

    Think this is ok?

    That should be great.
How high (tall) is the tank?
THat's an interesting mix of bulbs, did the hood come that way?

    Matt,

The tank is 25" deep without LS/LR and 18" wide.

My canopy is 48" outside, 47" inside width.

The light assembly is a custom ordered 42" x 11.5"W.

I have about 11" inside the canopy to suspend the light...so the whole assemble should end up about 4-6" from the water surface. I was worried that the light would not be intense enough for a reef but after some reading, I think it should be OK....

Yeah, since you got 150s instead of 250s I'd be sure to keep light intense stuff near the top. ;)

Ya that is an odd combo of lighting but very cool. I bet you will love it.
I would have gone with the 250 W MH but you should be fine with 150 HQI. Are they double ended or single ended bulbs.
I know with HQI the PAR values far exceed pulse start or coil Ballasts

Good luck, looks like your really done your home work

    Jason,

The bulbs are double ended....I thought about the 250's, but it really seemed like a lot of power and I had fears of heat dissipation. It would seem that I am right on the cusp for intensity. I am not sure of the ballast rating. It may be that I can upgrade the HQI to perhaps 175W or slightly more, but I won't know until I recieve the unit.

If you think I absolutely need the 250's I may be able to still upgrade for an additional $100 (the light is custom because I cannot fit a 48" in my canopy...the interior lenght is just under 47 and the custom fixture is 42"). I was thinking I should be OK for most applications and a clam or two....

    What do you think...??!!

    HQI = DE

I have a good friend that runs 2-150W HQI Ushios and 2-30W actinics on his 90. He has a lot of euphyllias and he has come crocea clams on the sand bed. He gets excellent results with the 150's. I ran 250 DE's on my 180 (same height) but think I could have gone with 150's. Also, DE's require a glass lens over the bulb, if not they produce a UV that is harmful to corals and your eyes. If this is a DIY set up, make sure that there is a piece of glass over that bulb.

Where are you getting this retro? PSL?

BTW, by PSL, I mean Pet Supply Liquidators. I just ordered my lights from them too. They have a bad name on a lot of other forums but I ordered a fixture from them about 1-1/2 yrs ago and it was a great experience, very reasonable.

I think I found your fixture here.

    Oh and BTW...lol

If that is the fixture you are getting, I know the guy that designed it for his 90. It was my buddy, canter292 over on RC. He called them and had them design that hood for his 90 and they liked it so much, they made it part of their line. I haven't talked to him in a little while, but last time we talked, he loved it and it was kicking butt. He just had a problem with one of the 20K halides he got from them, which they replaced.

Jeez Mike....your are pretty good at this! The assembly is indeed from PSL...!!! There is no way I can fit any of the conventional 48" in my canopy and I really did not want to go with the 36". I asked PSL if they had any custom size and they responded with the 42" they said they "made for another customer"....
