I will be drilling an overflow and return in the back of a red sea max 250 for a refugium. I've estimated that I need a 330 gph pump, so what size pvc would be necessary for that amount of flow? Would 1" be enough? And what type of connection do I need to connect the return pump to the pvc? Would 2 45 degree elbows be better than a 90 degree elbow? Would it be better to have a larger pvc pipe to drain water into the refugium to increase flow? This sump will only be used for a refugium and to increase the total water volume, so I don't think I need more than 5 X turnover on a 10-15 gallon refugium.

Please let me know what you think. I will be doing this in about 2 months, so I'm still in the planning stages. My mind is open to ANY suggestions. The RSM 250 will be an upgrade for my 10 gallon nano.

Why? The RSM 250 already has 4 stage filtration with 15 X turnover built into the back.

What do the 4 stages consist of?

sorry didnt know. then in that case everything you said sounds great. i would use 1-1/4" drain and 45s are always better for flow than 90s. i own a plumbing company and on all drain work we use 45s to help flow.

center overflow with a 240 gph skimmer, carbon bag, bio media bag (ceramic type, not bio balls), and two foam blocks just before the each of the two return pumps. You can also view the intro video on the RSM Red Sea MAX250 | New from Red Sea

45s help drains, but 2 45 give as much loss of flow as 1 90. I read that you want the elbows on the return pump. Two 45s will be the same as one 90.

And all you are doing is 300 gph??? You can do that with 3/4 tubing. 1" and 1.25 is way more than you need. I have that on my main system doing 800 gph.

Do you think I need more than 300 gph? It's a 66 gallon DT, I figured a 10-15 gallon refugium would be plenty, and you don't want to much flow through the refugium.

Or would vinyl tubing work better on the return than pvc to reduce elbows? Also, How do you attatch the pvc or tubing to the pump outlet? Or does it depend on the pump? Do some have threads or what?
