I would skip the rock and live sand. You should have enough in your DT that any amount you could fit in an HOB would not be enough to have any effect. You want the chaeto to have as much room to grow as possible. The best way to keep the chaeto in is to build a little egg crate guard. You can just super glue it onto the output of the filter. While your building that you should also make sure you have your light figured out and if need be build the guard to help support the light.

i don think the light support will be a problem see its a rena smart filter and the cartridge are doubled into like a 3d cube and theres a brace inbetween both cartridges. also could i use a clip on desk lamp? what kind of bulb

Yes clip on lights work very well. A daylight bulb will work best. If you can find one with a kelvin rating look for one that is rated at 6700k.

We call it egg crate in this hobby for some unknown reason. If you go to Home Depot or Lowe's and ask for drop ceiling light diffusion panels they will find it for you. Its fairly cheap for a big chunk, you can cut it will scissors and its infinitely useful for fish tanks.
