I have a perhaps silly plan. I want to set up some sort of high quality camera on my reef that does not require a computer connection (I have broadband, but want to avoid using a computer if there is a camera that communicates with my wireless Internet on its own) and that can automatically take a picture every 30 minutes.

I then want to set up some sort of picture frame on my office desk that will automatically display the current pic. I want, in essence, a continuous picture of my tank at work. I want it to be a high quality one though. Not some grainy video, just a nice, bright, current still.

Does anyone have the know how to help? Specifics please... Direct me to the right camera, the right display method, etc.

I'm willing to pay a premium for components that work well.

Well im no picture guru but if it were me and i was doing the same i would buy a HIGH quality digital camera with a flash card. Take the pictures myself, then put the card into my computer. Then i would upload them to your computer and make a file for the specific pictures you want. THen i would find a program (im sure there are quite a few out there ) that will take your pictures and will make a slideshow of them. Not sure if this is what you are looking for but i am just trying to help lol.

Welcome to 3reef! And allthough i agree your idea would work, but i think he's looking to get "real time" current pics, updated constantly through out the day.

You dont need a high end camera do it. my $500 Canon DSLR has a timer on it..I think anything from 20s to 10/15 min...could be wrong however in order to save the battery life I have the same to shut off after a minute of inactivity.

Grinder, I agree. with your second post. I believe what he is asking for is impossible without some type of connection to the computer and/or internet. I am no guru so I may be wrong.

Wow, that's a lot of reply's in not much time. Thank you all.

I wasn't very clear. I have a great broadband connection in both locations. I just want a camera to connect wirelessly to it without me having to plug it into a computer and leave it sitting there. I want to do this as a permanent setup, and my wife would kill me if I had to leave a laptop lying around to do it.

What I don't know is if there is such an Internet ready camera and whether there is a way to automate the process of sending the pics and receiving and displaying them.

I'm willing to go as far as using a tablet of some sort on the receiving end, an iPad if necessary, but only if necessary.

I've been looking at them and the ones I've seen have two problems. First, they tend to be designed to send low grade video rather than a high grade still. Second, on the receiving end, you have to view it on an inelegant device. I want something that looks like a picture on my desk, not something that looks like a laptop.

All these ideas are great, but please keep helping me refine the plan.
