I found some lights which are metal halide I believe. Does one think they can be converted into something which would benefit a reef tank??

Probably, but by the time you get them setup, with blue strips and all, you'd probably have almost as much money as if you bought some used aquarium mh, plus have a really ugly setup!! :)

And the bird crap flaking off would do horrors to your ammonia!! :)

those would be your standard lighting for a warehouse or something like that, they have single mogul bases to, you might have a hard time finding all the right bulb spectrum's for bulbs that'll fit those for a reef tank. If your looking for a cheap mh setup check out oddysea brands, they are really cheap fixtures, and simply buy better bulbs. as long as the ballasts are external for it you should be fine, some of the old models of this company had the mh halide ballasts built into the fixture and that caused overheating and fires.

i have taken this light apart several times and have taken apart an identical coralife brand, the internal components and holding fixtures and wiring is pretty much identical, only big dif i saw was the coralife digital ballasts were a little better put together but that didnt justify the extra 800 dollars to purchase the coralife model.
