Hey guys I purchased 2 acan frags a few days ago and decided to feed them for the first time yesterday. The one that ate the nls pellets kind of changed shape and became like a tube and then for the first time did not put out any sweeper tentacles last night. Is this normal? Im thinking its digesting and is kind of closed up because it already ate but I did not feed each head only a couple yet they are all looking the same, do they share food amongst the colony? The second frag didnt eat and has not fully opened up yet so I am hoping it will pull through and eventually settle in like the first one ( both purchased and acclimated at the same time, same way, same tank, etc.

Sounds normal for feeding, and yes they can share. It can take some colonies longer than others to acclimate. Are the colonies receiving the same lighting?

Yes, they are on opposite ends of the tank but both on the sandbed. The flow is a little different on the 2 frags but prob similar, you can see the flow moving the fleshy parts but it is not a constant high flow. The darker purple acan is the one that opened up and extends sweepers but the purple/green rainbow colored one stay pretty closed up

The flow could be an issue especially if it is higher on the end with the rainbow one. Are the light levels similar? The acan is will be less likely to open the more intense the lighting. Also some of the light reflects back from the glass.

The light is the same, the flow on rainbow one is prob lower but I guess I could always move the frag to see if it offers any improvement. How long should I give it to see if it opens up before I do anything?

Only difference in lighting was from the frag tank they came from/ They had an aquaticlife 4 bulb fixture that was mounted right on top of the tank ( not sure on the photo period ) and they were halfway up the tank on a rack. The tank is a shallow tank as well. I have the deeper tank with an aquaticlfie dual bulb fixture and my lights go on from 10a-11p

Not sure you can do much if it doesn't open. I would move it to an area with less light to see what happens. Acan lords are lower light corals.

ok thanks we will see what happens I guess. if only 1 of the 2 makes it it would be a bummer but at least not a total loss

I have moved the frag that isnt opening a few days ago so that it is pretty close to the one that is doing great. It still hasnt seemed to open up but I have noticed some small spionid worms in the middle of the colony. I have a picture of both colonies from today to hopefully help. Do you still believe they are both Lord Acans?? and do they look healthy??
I am starting to think maybe the rainbow colored one is not a Lord Acan and thats why it doesnt open up the same way??

Don't worry about it. I've got one that barely opened for almost a year!! Then one day while feeding Dilly, some brine shrimp floated on it. Cha Ching!! It hasn't closed up since. Now it's eating everything :) Loves frozen meaty foods the best. Here it's eating bloodworms.
