I can ramble so bear with me. I ordered 2 new 96 watt actinic bulbs (power compacts). I installed them and when I turned them on nothing. To make sure it wasn't the bulbs I put in an old bulb that I knew was working and nodda. I am pretty sure the ballast is blown. It is a 2 X250 watt, 2 x96 watt actininc Odyssea fixture. I have replaced all the bulbs with better quality and have replaced both halide ballasts with Ice Caps. I have been running just halides for a week now and need to make a decision on how to proceed.
I am house shopping so if things go according to plan will have a new place this summer and a new place means new tank so I don't want to spend a grand on a new lighting system that I will want to upgrade again by years end.
I am thinking of just buying LED actinic strips in place of the old bulbs, but I have no idea on how many watts per LED would be comparable to the two 96 watt PC's. Any suggestions? I am not very handy so DIY may not be the route to go.
I could just buy a new Odyssea Halide fixture with 4 x 54 watt actinic T5s for $289.
    Please help? Thank YOu

You didn't say what size tank you have. If it is 30-55 gal. 2 ecoxotic actinic Modules will do nicely if you don't want to DIY. 2 Modules will be $200.00 but last at least 5-8 years.

It is a 75 gallon tank and the fixture is a 48". Would I just be able to place the Modules in where the bulbs would normally go. I am checking now Thanks.

I have actually had the fixture going on 4 years and have been very satisfied with it, after I changed the halide ballasts and bulbs of course.;D

Unclejed, Those are perfect, now the question is do I need 4 or 2. Do you have these personally? Would 2 add enough blue with 2 x 250 watt Phoenix 14k's? Thanks

Yes, I have 2 Modules but they are the combo type. I have seen the all blue and, THEY ARE BLUE! I would start out with just 2 and see what you think. Did you pick up that each Module needs its' own timer? That is a drawback for some. I didn't mind since I only use the 2 for my tank. Ecoxotic is said to be woking on making them linkable but as of today they haven't.

Thanks again Uncled Jed, my actinic timer actually has two plug ins so I think I am set. I will order the two tonight. I will take pics and let everyone see the finished project. I am going to pull the "guts" out of the old PC cords and ballast and will install the modules in place of the old bulbs. K+ for your help.
