So does everyone use activated carbon? I have one in my second compartment of my marineland 400 filter... But was wondering if I should have it or not. Always used it for my FW but didn't know if it pulled too much from the sw.

Activated carbon removes organic pollutants, some of which discolor the water with a yellowish tint, organic acids, proteins, hormones, antibiotic compounds, and organic compounds as well as a variety of chemicals, medications, metals, and minerals.
Inorganic substances removed are, chlorine, chloramine, colors and odor causing substances such as phenols.

Removed organic, particles and substances adsorbed by the carbon will remain biologically active. Trapped waste particles will still decay and remain part of the aquatic system. Activated carbon is therefore best used on a short term basis and replaced regularly.

I run carbon 24/7. It's pretty much a requirement if you have any corals that do chemical warfare/allelopathy (zoas, palys, and chalices are the best known).

I replace it every 2 weeks, and use about 1/2 a cup on my 65g system.

    Welcome to 3reef Roger!

Definately. I have a DIY media container in my filter. I mix carbon with a little phosgaurd ...chrystal clear Caribbean water. I change it every 3 weeks.

These tanks do not have carbon in them. Yes I use it but not continuiously, just when I think the water needs to be polished more aggressively. Carbon is by no means a requirement to running a sw systems. It may allow you more room for error, and provided a media for benficial nutrifying bacteria to grow, and when you suspect you are have problems with some toxins produced by certain corals like the leather corals. It can be used intermittently to remove DOC that may tinge the water causing a yellowish colors. Carbon is a great thing and has its place but it is not a requirement. Choosing a quality carbon is more important than just running carbon IMO.
