I am setting up my sump, and I am wondering if my filtration should include activated carbon? What are your thoughts.

    Chemical Filtration
Chemical filtration is the use of some sort of chemical reaction to remove unwanted substances from the water. The most common chemical filtration agent used in aquaria is activated carbon (i.e. charcoal filters). Activated carbon removes things like chlorine (which should not be in your water in the first place) and DOC's. There are also chemical filtration media for the removal of phosphates, silicates and other substances. You must be careful when using chemical filtration because many kinds can cause new problems if not used properly. If you perform regular water changes with untainted water (i.e. RO water) and do not overfeed or overstock, there should generally not be a need for chemical filtration.

I have never used it once on my current set-up.

I run carbon 24/7 in a PM reverse substrate reactor changing it out every 4 to 5 wks. I can tell by the look of my elegance if it is time to change it or not. I would recommend running it in your set up.

i also run carbon 24/7 i have a wide mix of softies /lps/sps so it is a must for me to keep toxins low. my lps show the first signs of needing new carbon.
i use small amounts, and change often.

i use mine in a plastic holder that slides inbetween the baffles of my sump. but thinking i may get another reactor for it soon.

i dont think i would ever run a tank without carbon, gives me extra reassurance if something gets in there or maybe something dies or whatever the case be. it also keeps my water clearer than you might think possible :)
