    i would use a mixture of phosban, activated carbon, and nitrate sponge. that would give you a pristine tank.

    I've been using Kent's activated carbon and the back says it will remove trace elements as well. I still run it 24/7 though.

    I don't run carbon in mine and have not had a problem. That's not to say it's not necessary, just that my tank has survived six months without it.
