As the title says, what should be added to the tank first, tangs or anglefish. I want to add a flame angel soon, but also have yellow, and hippo tangs in the plan. Thanks,

I'd add the angels first so the tangs don't get a head start on establishing a territory.

But, I'm fairly new to this. Maybe someone with more experience could confirm or refute.

That is what im hoping on, :hehe: . I know both can be aggessive to new fish, but it would make sents that the tangs would want a bigger territory.

Flame angel all the way!! I love most angels, so it makes it really hard. But the main reason I got into salt was to get a flame, or and emperor. Ive read the emperor will most likely eat the corals, so it out. I want a reef, or atleast some corals. :( why do they have to eat corals!!! Oh well, now I can get a tang or two, and they can be the big show piece fish. So for now it is flame, till I get proof the emperor will not eat coral, lol. Emperor get big, and messy anyway..... Can you tell im trying to talk my self out of it, :hehe: . How are the shrimp doing??

The flame angel is about as hardy as any chromis and some damsel imo......I would say flame last. Ive had flames pick on clown tangs and triggers, ect. anywhere near the same size.....If previously established. Which there is no set time for establishment, its literaly on a per/fish basis (not species....but the individual). I would put the flame in last and go for small juv. tangs. The small juv are less hardy but adapt very well socialy in the long run with tankmates. Just make sure to get a SMALL flame, they are unpredictable past 2.5-3" at best from my exp. Good choice on being set on the flame. As they develop awesome personalities and the fishes that are compatible are also very active and colorful.

Not to burst your bubble, but flame angels can pick at corals. IMO its the fish and there is a chance it could be a bastard. I have a lemonpeel angel in my tank and it used to pick at my free flowing corals, but now its seemed to have gotten over it?!

Good luck, and the flame angels are a gorgeous fish, and are sure to catch the eye of any onlookers.

I hear alot of clients reprt this...most are because they pick adults (3" or more) If you chooes a small juv it should be fin as they have not developed the taste. IMVEOP.....

Thanks guys. I do know there is a risk of the flame picking on the corals, but I do agree with Oonickoc. In the wild juv angles dont use corals as food, but as they get older they will use them as a stable food sorce. Like with the emperor angel. You can get a juv, and they are good with corals, but as they get older, and the mouth get bigger lol, they can do some damage to corals. I will do like you said and get the tangs first. And I am planing on getting smalls tangs if all posible. But im still gonna wate a month or two before I make anymore moves. Is it hard to find yellow tangs under 3 inches??? Everytime I see them in the store, they are like 3-4 inches!!! I can find hippo tangs all the way down to like 1 inch, so thats no problem. Also, how aften do you feed the tangs algea?? Ive got one of those "clips" to hold algea, so thats covered, I just dont know if they need pure algea everyday, or a few times a week?? Thanks,

    Michael

I have basically the same question as Birchell, how many times to feed. My tang right now has been eating a lot because i had so much algae all over the place!! But i fed it som red sea calurpa from my fuge yesturday, and like on wednesday i feed algae that you buy in sheets, i think its called sea veggies!?

Birchell, i dont like the look of the clip, so i found a rock that has a finger size hole on it, and i place the algae in there. And i take it out in like 2-3 hours later so it wont pollute that much. I believe Craig Manoukian(3reef old-timer) wrote a thread on tangs, and he said you can feed common vegtables like peas and broccoli that it will eat it. Very good thread on tangs. Ima try to find it for you!
