when i bought my tank used, the owner gave us a large amount of sand. this turned out to be about 1-2 in across the tank. i want some sand burrowing fish, so can i add some more? how would i do that? and in a 75 gallon tank, how many pounds of live sand wpuld i need to get a dsb? would it matter if i got slightly different sand, because i dont know what kind of sand he had, other than live. Thank you all

type of sand should be somewhat smaller particle size for burrowing fish to burrow in. 4"+ is considered dsb. I would only add 1" layer per week so bacteria down in the existing sand can move towards the surface without taking forever.

i thought dsbs were good for the tank as long as they were stirred regularly which is good cause i want alot of burrowers
i read a mag that said shallow beds were the worst kind of substrate

They have found that the top inch or slightly more in the ocean provides most if not all of the denitrification. Use a 1/2" to 3/4" tube to stir the gravel. Poke it into the sand, cover the end with your thumb, lift, release thumb. Do no more than 1/4 of the bottom at a time. This will keep the storm to a minimum. If you are going to use a lot of burrowers you may not need to stir the sand. With burrowers it is best to put the rock up on pvc tubes that are slightly higher than the sand bed. Drill large holes in the tube, one at each end and on opposite sides on the tube, two total per tube, to allow water flow and provide burrows for you creatures.
