adding Dry Base rock?

    hey guys.
    just wanted to know whether it is safe to add dry base rock to an established reef tank??? i would like to add base rock since its cheaper...

    any experience in this area???

    As long as it is "dry" base rock it will be ok to add.Make sure and scrubb it down in some ro or old tank water to make sure there's nothing still on the rock, but as long as it is just dry rock there will be nothing on it to cause an ammonia spike(then a mini cycle).

    Absolutely! I've done this several times. As Geoff said, make sure to scrub the rock or at least rinse very well or you'll end up with a dust storm like no other in the tank! I usually scrub it a little with a stiff brush and rinse with RO water. Also, your protein skimmer might go a little nuts, so just watch for that.

    If you are worried, or you don't have much rock in the tank right now, I would add a little at a time. Maybe one or two pieces depending on the size of the rocks. But, if it is really base rock, you shouldn't have much of a problem.
