Personally, I wouldn't go any more than two inches deep. Then you are starting to explore the DSB, which can lead to problems down the road a piece when it gets older.

ITO just adding sand on top, I don't see a problem with it. You may get a nitrate spike but that's about it.

I added about an inch of sand due to the fact that my Goby re-arranges the landscape and was leaving bare spots--I poured it through a pvc pipe and just lifted the pipe slowly to reduce the dust storm. Never saw any spike in anything. I agree with John--I would not go to 4" though.

Im at about 1 inch because Iv upgraded my tank twice and did not buy more. I have crushed coral now but want to add sand so my sand sifters can sift better. Dont think they like the CC.

Add only a little at a time. If you add too much at one time, you could smother the bacteria and critters in your sandbed.

Just added about an inch and a half on half of my tank. I might add more in a few weeks depending how it looks when the dust settles. Ill track my params and let you all know if anything happens.

    Ok heres my overnight results.

Calcium is up 40 to 500. Gonna wait on that to come down.
ph is down from 8.4 to 8.2
Carbonate hardness is down from 12 to 10
I added about a 1/4 dose of buffer to bring both those back up.

Other than that everything looks fine.
    ammonia 0
    nitrite 0
    nitrate 0
phosfates still high as they have been 2

    Ill keep you updated.
