Is it alright to add sand with life in the tank? I have a haddoni carpet anemone, rock anemone, corals, crabs, snails, f. per, domino damsel, base rock, and about 15 lbs of live rock. I have a very shallow bed and would like a slightly deeper bed. Is it alot of trouble? What exactly would the process be? BTW it's a 30 gal tank.

Assuming your tank has been up and running awhile you should be able to add small amounts of sand with no problems. I would not double your sand quantity in one or two days, spread it out over a week or so.

what type of sand, i wouldn't add sugar fine sand very messy, but adding washed argonite wouldn't be to bad

also why do you want a deeper one, IMO more sand= more problems eventually

I just replaced some sand in my tank. I just siphoned some out and added a little at a time. I only added about 2-3 lbs. at anytime. I washed it first then put it in with a cup. It made everything cloudy for a few hours but it doesn't bother the fish or corals, just like a storm on the reef.

K+. My thoughts exactly. Just like a storm. I have added some to the seabed a few lbs at a time per day. It works great.

Why do you guys wash it? People pay for Purple-up (damn that's a lot of "P"s) which is made up of the same stuff that you are washing away.

since we are adding it to a tank with livestock we want to get all the little particles that would float in the water

Thanks for the feedback. I just wanted a little more sand. All I have is about and inch or so. My carpet anemone moves between a certain rock and the sand around it, so I wanted to add a little more. If it's not necessary though, I won't worry about it. I just see alot of tanks that have way more sand that what I have. My brother said what I have is enough. I was just making sure though.
