Like the title suggest, can a sump be added to an already established aquarium that is not drilled? I would like to eventually add a sump/refugium under my 55 gallon tank.

Of course, I also have a 55 and added a sump. You will need to buy an overflow box, I use an Eschoppes (sp.?) 800 and a Rio 2100 return. Just plumb it up and you should be good to go. I would suggest a 20gal. long for a sump, but you can really use anything you have available. I also made a refugium out of one of the compartments I made in the sump.

It's not hard at all. I had my tank set up for a few months before I added my overflow and sump.

Guitar man what are the dimensions of your 55g stand, or did you make your own stand? I have a sealife systems sump under my 55g and would love to build a sump/fuge but, I can't find a tank to fit under my stand. I would love a 20g long but, it is just too wide.
