    What are you keeping in your tank that would require the addition of kalkwasser?

    No you don't have to. Kalk is used to help maintain CA and Alk levels.

    First set up a system for top off that has little or no chance of failure. when you are just starting, try a 5 gal Kent Aquadose, set the drip rate to about 100gtts/hrs (1 drop every three seconds) and see how things go, increasing or decreasing drip rate as req. When supplimenting kalk, make sure your drip additions do not exceed the ammount evaporating from your system or you'll OD. Once you've got a good idea for running your top-off system, add kalk & spike it with 10-20ml of white vinigar, it will increase the absorbtion considerably. don't rely on kalk to establish your desired ca levels, but to help maintain them.
    try these;
    Kent Marine Aquadose - 5 Gallon
    JBJ Automatic Top Off System
    Deltec KM-500 Kalkwasser Mixer

    Very little addition once its right

    HI,
    My saltwater system has lot of live rock, sand,and othe sorces of calcium and I haven't added any calcium in months its staying around 500, I thought it would be constant battle to maintain calcium its not.
    I have a few anemones,several types of softie corals, lots of coraline and inverts. it seems very stable the trick for me was keeping mag around 1200, this seems to prevent precip events that can exhaust your ca and use up KH. Its easier than I expected.

    Another plus with mag is it seems to help prevent that excessive precip in pumps and skimmers.
