    Do additives like purple up aid in the growth of coraline or is it just a sells pitch for stuff that doesnt hurt or harm anything?

    purple up most likely won't help you if its not growing. it does indeed supply stuff coraline needs to grow. but you all ready get the stuff you need in your salt mix. unless you haven't done a water change in a long time its probably something else that need to modified independantly rather then in 3 in one thing. all it has in it is calcium and iodine and maybe magnesium or strontium i think.

    it will give you a boost if its already growing but then you probably wouldn't need it.

    edit: and it gives you some tips like keep phosphate low and ph at 8.2. it doesn't do that it just tells you to do that lol.

    I used purple up this time around on my FOWLR set up
    as Soustadt states it does not contain any coralline. You will have to have some present in the tank and this supplement encourages it to grow quicker

    I have noticed a difference personally, Id say previously it took about 2- 3 years to get the same amount of growth as I have in 12 months using this product

    I used to use purple up when my tank when fairly new and I think also it helped speed the process up. You can also help it spread faster simply by scraping the coraline on the sides and front of your tank.

    trust me...if your calcium, mag and alk are in order you will get coraline growth and you will curse the day you ever wished you had it!

    Somebody told me that one day and I laughed...but the colors are soo preatty! Well I now have it EVERYWHERE! On my pumps, on my rocks, on my glass. I have to take my pumps out every month or so and run them in vinegar!

    But I still do think the colors of coraline is pretty though! :}

    schackmel is right it will piss you off when it takes off. ive kinda stopped giving this warning since no one takes heed.

    but not only is the scraping annoying it also will ruin the effective-ness of your live rock(IMO). now i know i don't have to go into the whole surface area discussion about holes and how the more holy a rock is the better it is at removing the ammonia and nitrites, not to mention the deeper holes gives a anaerobic zone to remove nitrates. the coraline over time fills the holes and makes your rock smooth

    Never heard it put this way before, but it makes sense. I noticed once the coralline covered parts of the rock I could see, my pods were not as prevalent. Could be due to the fact that I don't raise them, or could be that they use the holes and feed off the crud in them, and if the holes are blocked my coralline, then they can't get in.

    Any solution to keeping coralline to a minimum, on the rocks, without disturbing anything else?
