I have been wondering if anyone has actually gotten a Tang while in their aquarium to their estimated adult size .

I got my Sailfin Tang 18 months ago when he was about 2.5" long, he is now about 5" long. Will he get to the estimated 12" in a 90 gallon tank?

I have read varying articles about limited size due to life in a confined space and others that say it does not matter what size your tank is, they will grow to the estimated size.

    What are your thoughts?

I would be very curious to know, if you have tangs, what size are they and how much have they grown since you got them/in what time frame?

I have a Sailfin just like your posted pic and he has grown about a half inch in length since I got him about a year and a half ago (My personal favorite fish of all time. The interesting part is that he has gotton very wide throught the shoulders and stomach. These are one of the most sensible and hardy Tangs that you can buy.

    Surfin is a lifestyle.....

In my experience with fish in general, and my yellow tang, the growth rate largely depends on how often you feed them. I feed every other day usually, and my fish have grown but do not grow that fast. I have had my yellow tang for about 4-5 months and I haven't noticed any considerably growth. I have had my clown and yellow watchman goby for about 1.5 years and the goby has almost reached full size and my clown has grown, but is still about 3/4 of full size.

i feed every other day also. Although for the first 6 months i fed every day.

I was wondering if there were any fishers out there that have had a fish for more than 5 years and what kind of growth they have seen. i read on a forum where a woman claimed to have had her clown fish for over 20 years.

That sailfin will easily outgrow the 90g. They will grow to full size, regardless of tank size, but it will definitely grow quicker once it has more swimming room.

I had mine ina 90g and I moved over to the 200g tank when it got about 6" long. At that length, I feel he was cramped and needed more swimming room.

Well, I hope he grows slow. I don't think I will be able to upsize my tank for a year or two at the earliest.

You might want to seriously think about selling him to someone with a bigger tank. In 2 years he will get much bigger than he is now, even if he is a little stunted from not enough swimming room.
