Been pricing out fish tanks, looking at purchasing a SeaClear 46gal bowfront. I've been researching how to set up a tank and I have a pretty good understanding of needed equipment, but am a little hazy on the details about using a sump with a trickle filter and protein skimmer. How do all the pieces fit together and whats the process in setting it up?

Here is a link to a great article on filtration:

I don't recommend acrylic for saltwater tanks. They get scratched very easily and are expensive. All it takes is a little bump from a rock and you have an unsightly gash. Look in to glass tanks. They don't scratch easily and are easier to clean. However, they are heavier and some claim that visibility is not as good as acrylic tanks. I have owned glass and acrylic tanks and did not notice a difference.

I've been doing more research and looking more on craig's list to find a tank and stand for a good price. Good idea/bad idea? What should I look for when I go and look at it or see pictures of it. Thanks for the help.

Make sure the frame around the tank isn't damaged because it helps support the glass. Make sure they didn't cut a center brace at the top of the frame. Also, make sure there are no bubbles or air pockets or peeling of the silicone in the corners.

Nothing wrong with a used tank, just be careful because people often try to unload leaking tanks. Still, I have gotten awesome deals on tanks on craigslist. Also, keep in mind a 40 breeder at petco is only $40, though a stand for one is hard to find.

Its a strong possibility that instead of a 46 bowfront acrylic, I may getting an awesome deal on craiglists for a 50gal glass with stand and some equipment. I just have to go and look at the tank myself to make sure its not trashed. Thinking of doing a 15gal sump, new to this whole thing, but Ive been trying to read about and talk to the local dealer as much as possible. Any tips on a good sump setup, or warnings about doing a sump? Thanks for all the help.
