    Well it seems to be the season of upgrades. I will upgrade my lighting this summer and now want to upgrade my protein skimmer. I am doing this with future tank upgrades in mind. I wanted your advice on the ASM G-1x protein skimmer. Any body have it, or have an ASM? Thoughts on it? Here is a link to the one I would get.

    Is that over-rated for a 55? I guess it would be ok if you're really overstocked as long as it doesn't over-skim.

    Can you over skim? Surely over skimming is better then under - and to buy something that is far greater then your need surely would only last you longer (future tank upgrades etc)

    My opinion - go for it if you can afford it!

    That is a nice skimmer, though I am an Aqua C man!
    It should work out well for you!

    The pros on buying a "bigger than needed" skimmer are;
    1. Most ppl tend to overstock.
    2. Most ppl tend to over feed.
    3. If you ever wanted to up-grade to a bigger tank, you would be covered.

    +1 agree with that.

    And yes, you CAN overskim where the skimmer pulls out not only waste, but strips the water of all nutrients and trace elements as well. :-/

    I have the ASM G4+ for my 200. It looks like a nice unit, fairly well built. A little less well built than an Octopus IMHO though. I have yet to fire up the ASM though either. But from what I can tell, looks like they are quality units ;)

    Thanks everyone for the input, it really helped. I may then get the next size down. I don't want to over skim, although if I do a dry skim, will that help not over skim?

    I don't think you would be overskimming with the ASM
