Drilled tank with internal overflow, or external (hang on) overflow? For internal 1/4" would be plenty thick. If it's external I'd go with acrylic.

No, 1/4" would be far from overkill. That's what I'd use. You're going to be stacking rocks in there, so you don't want something that will break easily in case of a mishap. (I'm assuming reef tank)

Why don't you just use black acrylic? That way you won't have to see the plumbing through it?

In my opinion glass would be better because acrylic is next to impossible to bond to glass. You just paint one side of the glass, problem solved.
and yes, I'd use 1/4" throughout, including the baffles. Also, 1/4" is still cheap. Thicker than that and you start getting into some serious money.

Thank you mm + karma for the fast response, it cost me $50 total for the overflow and baffles, not to bad I guess

I only have experience with a glass holes over flow but don't overflows that run to the bottom of a tank are filled with water? That would mean water is in contact with painted glass and paint doesn't bond well to glass either?

If you want to go glass, you could buy black glass. Then you won't have to paint it and won't have to worry about ugly scratches in the paint.
