I have a 55g FOWLR setup and right now it has 60watts of normal 10000k flourescent bulbs on it. I obviously want to upgrade, but I dont know what to do. I have a custom built canopy on the 55 that only allows a fixture of 45" or smaller. I can not afford Metal Halides. I want to go with PC or VHO. I want something that I can attach to the canopy. What should I do. I know there are retrofits that are 46 inches, but thats an inch to big. Should I go wuth a 36"? I kinda like the idea of PC lighting with 2x96watts which would come to around 192watts. Again I need advice or suggestions on lights and where to look.

The 36'' should be ok. You don't have any corals so if you'll be happy with the 2x96 watts go with them.

It depends on what you want to do. If you plan on adding corals I would go with the VHO. You could go with 4 36" bulbs and stager them to get good light to both ends.

I got the impression that frogguy didn't want to do corals.
