    Hi,

I have a 10 gallon tank that I want to set up as a QT tank for incoming fish or as a hospital tank. I have some sand in there now and have filled it with RO water, but I haven't mixed in salt or put anything else in.

I would like to keep a couple of damsels in there permanently and then use it for new fish for the DT and/or to treat sick fish.

I have an air stone, a small power head, and a heater. What should I put in the tank to make sure it stays cycled? Is live rock a good choice or a HOB filter? If I end up adding medications to the tank (copper) will that kill the beneficial bacteria on live rock?

Do I need a protein skimmer for it, with just a few damsels? (2 or 3 probably)

Anything else I haven't thought of?

I don't think I would put damsels in a hospital or QT tank. You want fish to be as comfortable as possible in QT and the damsels would just harass any fish you put in there. Also live rock is a no go for a hospital tank.

If the tank may be used as a hospital tank you don't want any sand or rock, anything that can absorb medicines or treatments in it at all. Always use inert things like PVC pipe or fittings for fish to hide in which can be disinfected when done and reused. You will have to toss the sand after each use.
For filtration an air lift sponge filter works well but a hang on back like an AquaClear is best. Buy several sponge inserts and stick one or two in your display tank or sump so it will be charged with bacteria when you need it. Always throw the sponge away after use since it again will be contaminated and add then another new one to the sump or display for next time.

Ok, great, thanks for this advice! Now I just have to scoop out the sand! Darn it!
