In my current 90 gallon tank I have a rather large Pistol shrimp, an orange spotted goby, and a geometric Pixie Hawk fish. The tank I am transferring to I would like to keep smaller ornamental shrimp(Peppermint shrimp, cleaner shrimp, and some sexy shrimp). The new aquarium is also going to be bare bottom so I am definitely going to find a new home for the Pistol shrimp. Question is about the Pixie Hawk fish and the spotted goby. From what I have read they say you should have sand for the goby but I have never seen him do anything with it. He has never built a burrow never sifted through it so I am wondering if he will be fine in a barebottom tank. He has also never paired with the pistol so I feel fine separating them. The other question is would the Pixie Hawk fish attack and eat the other shrimp I plan on getting? It is still fairly small like an 1 1/4in.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Even though the goby is not a big sifter or burrower I still think that a BB system would stress him. I could be wrong, maybe with enough caves and cracks he might feel secure enough.

The Hawkfish will probably show some interest if not actually attacking the shrimp especially as he becomes established and matures. Mine never bothered my large cleaner shrimp and arrow crab but I can see were they might want to eat peppermints, sex shrimp, more of the smaller types of shrimp.

    Good luck.

Gobies burrow and Hawkfish eat shrimp, seems like that is the nature of the beast. Hope you do not have to re-house them.

I would say there will be issues with both based on my experience. My goby doesnt burrow much as he has a low little overhang he calls home, but I do see him sift a mouthful from time to time so I would think the loss of thier semi natural envirment would stress him. My hawk was peaceful with my 3 peppermints for a while but now I have none. I have seen him grab a hermit and throw it from the rocks a couple times as well. I havent seen him eat any as they are all accounted for though. So I would be very cautious of that. If he were to ever go berserk & carpet surf his loss would be short & quickly replaced with some fresh shrimp & maybe an arrow crab, I just dig them for some reason.

That's kinda what I figured. Well I found a home for the hawk fish and friend of mine said he would take the Goby if I needed him to. Now I just need to find a home for the pistol.

try giving the goby some sand it might come to use and it's better than having to place sand in the tank where it will stress out everything in there. make sure the hawk fish is well
fed and it might lower the chance of it eating shrimp same with dwarf angel fish but with coral .

I honestly have no idea what the hawk fish is eating. It just seems to wonder around the rock hunting I think. Every time I feed the tank he never eats anything. I have had the thing for more then a year so it must be eating some thing right? I assume it has been hunting for copepods like a mandarin would. The goby has been in a tank with sand for like two years and never built a burrow and I think I caught it spit sand out once. The pistol on the other hand has dug out 2/3s of the back of my tank, accidently rearranged most of my rockwork, and has a pile of sand about 6-7 inches high in the back.
