If it is the powerhead pushing temp up a degree or so is it possible....and bear with me .... is it ok to have powerhead above water line with just intake under water and would having main body out of water suffice?? I know this may seem like a daft question but understand I am a novice Thanks for all the help so far it is really appreciated.

the red sea max has 2 pumps top left corner with directional nozzles. The ??expert told me this was , in his opinion, not enough and advised adding another powerhead to push more flow though the live rock. I dont know what brand it is as I am at work at present but I think its fairly powerful and turns the tank over lots !!! That is why I was concerned about the p head overheating the tank. Any more thoughts on the main body of the p head being out of the water ....will this help. Also if I want to keep the hood down as designed will fans built into the hood help if the heat cant really escape ?

Well most powerheads should be fully submerged. Even if it is not fully submersible it will heat the tank just the same. What you want is as low a wattage powerhead as possible, it is the wattage that increased the temperature in the tank...

I use the Hydor Koralia 4. With this powerhead I only need to use one and a seio lower in the tank. The Hydro Koralia 4 runs at only 8.5 watts and 1250 GPH

Right .... as a test I turned powerhead off this morning to see if temp dropped down. Phoned home to ask temp and after being off for 10 hours it remains at 81 f . How long does it take for temp to drop in 34 gal tank ?
Still cant believe that red sea would sell a product that overheats the room temp is no more than 22 c !!!!
