    Hello again!
I am in the process of converting my 46 bow to a fowlr tank. My first shot at saltwater fish keeping. My question is right now I have about 60 pounds of Caribsea African Cichlid mix, it is supposedly aragonite based. In your opinions will this be safe for use in my aquarium. I could put the $60-$80 dollars saved on substrate toward a RO/DI unit!

While the substrate probably wouldn't hurt anything it is very coarse and will cause issues trapping detritus. I wouldn't use it.Not worth the risk. This is an expensive venture and cutting corners to save money is A sure fire way to fail IMO.

I just realized that there are several types of this cichlid mix. What I have looks like fine grain white sand. If I remember correctly it said marine safe on the bag, but it has been several months ago since I looked.

Start hanging out more at your LFS. You'll be surprised the people you meet and if you get lucky get some good deals along the way. I scored my lighting, pump for my sump, at a steal from my LFS. Sand isn't that expensive to risk it. 46gal might be one bag at $20. Believe me I feel your pain, my budget is tight too and just built a 75gal from the ground up.

I wish I could, but I haven't found a LFS close by that deals in marine supply. I have one but it has an extremely small selection and its not very healthy looking.

It's funny you mention foster and smith, I just placed an order with them on Friday. I have used them in the past for a few things. I have a few shops around that are good for freshwater fish, I may ask if they know of any marine shops. I figure they won't mind saying since it won't be losing them any business.
