Since I am new to this hobby, is that normal? I am actually bought some cured indonesian rock that had some great purple coraline on it. Now it's turning brown.... is that normal?

Need info on your set up and equipments.

    List your water parameters

What type of lighting on the tank? How long do you leave it on a day?

it is probably just a diatom bloom. If there is new equipment, new rock, new sand, or new glass tank, etc, diatoms will be one of the first stages of life present. Make sure your water used for setting up the tank and topping off is at least RO, preferrably RODI

I assume this is a new set up? you may be describing diatoms? which are very normal in new tanks , did you or do you use tap water?

diatoms construct their skeletons from silicates which are present in new tanks mainly from all the new plastics that go into them

once the silicates are exhausted, the diatoms go away and the rocks look new again

if you use tapwater then the problem can last longer as the tap water may have additional silicates in it

I just bought a RO unit but used tap water in the beginning. Thanks so much for your replies. I will keep watching it and use RO water in the future. How long do you think it will take for the diatoms to go away?

checked the pictures , looking good , nice light unit by the way

diatoms , could last 4 weeks or so IME , expect it to get much worse before it gets better also, dont panic, the tank can look like an explosion at a powder coating factory, but then they fade and each passing day after the peak, the tank looks cleaner and cleaner

Thanks so much Steve... a big relieve!!! I was honestly a bit worried but will not add any fish or corals for another 3 weeks. Just want to make sure... and as we know this hobby takes a lot of patience....
