Well that does not sound like typical diatoms to me at all. Can you post a picture please. You might be dealing with something much more sinister.

    might be file size Anthos

do you have a photobucket account - its free
you can download to photo bucket and then click on the IMG code and copy directly into your post - that way you get a picture and not a thumbnail

I even got a localized diatom bloom after I added my thermometer probe. From now on I will do a vinegar wash to every single thing I put in the tank. Even though they will go away in due time, it just makes the tank look bad IMO.

Hope it goes away quickly for you, Anthos312.

created a photo bucket account. pictures are loaded. please look, Corals were even worse today, the anthelias was fully closed and not extended at all, my mushroom was even spittin up a little out of its mouth, fish seem fine and eating good but im worried cause the corals arent showing improvement and getting worse...

    Here are the photos:

Also, i used two different camera lighting settings so that you can really see the extent to which this is taking over....

Well it does not resemble those nasty dinoflaggelattes. I would be inclined to consider cynobacteria as the culprit, but hard to really tell in the pictures. Reefcleaners.org has a nice section on the nasty algaes.

ReefCleaners.org | Clean Up Crews and Macro Algae - Nuisance Algae ID Guide

IME corals do not respond to diatom so dramatically. And some algaes can look exactly alike and definitive ID can only be made microscopically.

based on those images , I think Corailline may have a point with Cyno bacteria ( its a brownish/ red judging by the images and looks like a film rather than a powdery residue which diatoms always look like when I have had them although I appreciate if they start growing over the top of each other, then this could be the result

I was going to ask about flow, before I saw image 4 - great wave action IMO

yea, flow shouldnt be a problem, ive got an Hydor evolution 750 gph at the side of the tank pushing towards the other end creating the "wave action" (looks great with my halide light), and i also have 2 aqua clear 20's (only 1 is on, i think i will turn the other on to try and get some more flow.)

do you guys have any recommendations of what to do?

I think I see a number of empty snails shells in your tank - are these there as new homes for hermits, or has your CUC become depleted?

as if its diatoms, (which I am still inclined to believe it is) and you had a full CUC they would get on top of it within a week or so IME
