I was wondering it would be possible to do a 40g breeder with this odd stocking list.
    3 yellow tail damsel fish
    pair of maroon clowns

I was considering picking a 40g breeder during the next petco sale, so I was wondering if this would work.

    Thanks,
    Joe

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
My larger clown fish nearly killed my yellow tailed damsel. I figured the yellow tail would be able to fend for himself, I was wrong. The clowns and the yellow tail were all about the same age, 3 years.

Since clown fish are them selves damsels aggression between the types seems only natural.

Maroons are very aggressive as they mature.

Yellow tail damsels are my favorite blue damsel but I would not be able to keep on presently with my older clowns.

I would hazard to guess in a 40 gallon breeder the damsels will do each other in eventually and the clowns will take care of the rest.

They would probably all be ok initially or you might increase your chances if you add an anemone (as appropriate) for the Maroons to reside in.

I agree. I would choose a different Damsel as yellow tails are less aggresive then Blues,Dominoe's,or Striped. However these will be much more aggresive to each other and usually the weakest one will be picked on mercilessly.

I also agree with everyone else. Garentee those maroons will kill the yellow tails in time. Any other damsel I can think of that would be able to stand a chance wouldn't tolerate any other damsel in the tank... There would be just way too much full on fighting. Sooner or later you will probably be left with just a single damsel or the maroons. Your best bet is probably sticking with Oscellaris or another similar mild aggressive clown. You could then keep your 3 yellow tails and even add another 2 not as aggressive damsels like the Talbot's damsels! Out of all of the damsels I've had I LOVE the talbot's! Beautiful but able to hold their own if need be but won't go around attacking every fish they see! I have mine in with an oscellaris, anthia and red spotted trimma goby and I habe NO problems with anyone! But the tank is still considered a mildnly aggressive tank. Look into the Talbot's. You may like them ;P

    Super helpful as usual.

I also agree that the maroons are pretty mean hombres, and would look at perhaps another species. That might be an unnecessary comma, but nana will help me out if so.

thanks for the responses. any thoughts on what would go good with a pair of full grown maroon clowns in a 40g or would it be better to go with a pair of tomato clowns?

ive had the opposite problem. My Yellow tail killed my black and white clown, and would have killed my maroon, but i decided to eradicate that problem.

he was the biggest fish, and added first to a 20, i was asking for it. If you wait for your tank to mature with time, you could probably get away with buying small juvis of the fish, and add em all so they're starting all together.

ive seen some TINY YT devils, i mean damsels, at some lfs's. If you could get your hands on them, i can see things having more than an ok change. but NOTHING is guaranteed in this hobby, no matter if its been done in a friends tank. Each tank is different.

I think a pair of skunk clowns would be nice, theyre really unique, and quite timid from the ones ive seen... tomatoes can get big and aggressive, as can all, but these guys closely resemble maroons
